Laura Macdougall

I graduated from university with a degree in Classics and a Masters in Latin but with absolutely no idea what I wanted to do in terms of work. So I ran away to Italy. I lived there for two years, working as an English teacher and freelance translator. I knew I wanted to continue working with language in some way, so when I returned to London I completed various internships in publishing houses and with literary agents, before getting my first job at Hodder & Stoughton in 2010. While there I built my own list of authors, which included debut novelists Julie Sarkissian and Martine Bailey and bestselling crime writers such as Mons Kallentoft.

After five years I had realised that being an editor wasn’t quite right for me. I loved the editorial side of my job, but wanted to be more closely involved in shaping an author’s career, so I left to become an agent. I spent two years in Brixton, at Tibor Jones & Associates, where I worked closely with the MD on the management of Wilbur Smith’s co-authored projects while also building my own list of authors. I now represent about twenty writers of fiction and non-fiction, including Ruth Hogan, author of the international bestseller THE KEEPER OF LOST THINGS, the Labour MP Jess Phillips and the actor Jim Broadbent.

In August 2017 I moved to United Agents where I am an agent in the Book department, and where I’m continuing to build my list of authors.

I’m particularly keen to work with debut writers of both fiction and non-fiction, and will consider anything that isn’t children’s, fantasy, or science-fiction.

If fiction, please send the following:

  • A one-page synopsis (no longer)
  • The first three chapters or fifty pages of your novel

If non-fiction, please send the following:

  • A one-page synopsis (no longer)
  • An extract from the book of around 5,000 words

  • Commercial fiction
  • Literary fiction
  • Narrative non-fiction.
