I worked at Waterstones before discovering that literary agenting was ‘a thing’ and enthusiastically joining A P Watt in the belief that as general assistant there I would get to read all day. As it turns out we have to read all night and do admin all day, but now I’m at Blake Friedmann Literary, TV and Film Agency I have a healthy list of authors writing fiction and non-fiction, and am keen to find more. I love energetic, fresh voices telling us of lives that are less represented in fiction (and non-fiction), and enjoy the darker side of the everyday (i.e. a dysfunctional family or an unusual romance). I’m open to everything really, except children’s books, fantasy and sport!
Books I’ve loved recently include Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell, Wild by Cheryl Strayed and Longbourn by Jo Baker.
- Literary fiction
- Commercial fiction
- Narrative non-fiction – memoir, current affairs, humour, food writing etc…
Happy to offer email and/or face-to-face feedback meeting on their work; for those further afield an email or a call about their work makes sense, and for more local people I’d love to meet and chat over coffee – my treat, of course!
Completely flexible on what’s required in terms of time and effort until we learn via the first few mentees!
