I’m the Publishing Director of The Borough Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. I came into publishing sideways, via Book Club Associates and Waterstones. Those jobs gave me an eye for the market, and I was in the lucky position of being sent all the new books ahead of time and meeting some of my favourite writers at publication dinners and launch parties. Moving to publishing ‘proper’ was always the plan, though, and Hodder took a chance on my editorial abilities by hiring me in 2006. Whilst there I acquired and edited many wonderful books, including Chris Cleave’s ‘The Other Hand’. I moved to HarperCollins to head up The Borough Press in 2015; our authors include Joanna Cannon, Tracy Chevalier, Lionel Shriver and Susie Steiner. I believe that a propulsive plot and sheer readability are just as important in a novel as what might be seen as its more literary qualities – my favourite books all have that in common, and it’s what I look for in every book we welcome onto the Borough list.
I am offering two hours of mentoring in person with follow-up as required by email or telephone.
