Harriet Bourton

harriet-bourton-picI’m the Publisher for Orion Fiction at the Orion Publishing Group, where we are lucky to publish some incredible authors – Ian Rankin, Erica James and Michael Connelly to name just a few. Previously I worked at Transworld for three years where I oversaw their Women’s Fiction list, working with Sophie Kinsella, Danielle Steel and Cathy Bramley. Before that I worked for Hodder & Stoughton and Headline where I was involved with a real mixture of commercial authors. I adore commercial fiction: discovering a new author whose book you can’t tear yourself away from is one of the best feelings on earth, in my humble opinion. As an editor, I am drawn time and again to interesting stories about interesting women – characters who feel like friends, or who force you to question a dilemma, or who help you escape from the real world for a little while. I also have a soft spot for warm, funny non-fiction (I acquired The Unmumsy Mum when at Transworld), and I do love a suspenseful thriller with a great hook, strong voice and a plot that keeps you guessing. If you can pitch me your book in one sentence, I’m a rapt audience.

I’m offering three hours of in-person mentoring with extra support over the phone or on email where required. I’d suggest meeting twice over several months – we can discuss how best to use the time. I’ll try to be as flexible as possible, although I have a young child who I’m still not convinced isn’t actually feral. My confession is: I hate Skype.
